The Matamata Turtle inhabits dark still waters. Its body color resemble s dead leaves, and it can grow up to 45cm in length. Its back is usually covered with algae which serve as a camouflage .
It often hides itself in the mud or amongst the dead leaves waiting for its prey. The "hair" around its neck that moves with the waves helps it to confuse and detect its prey.
